In the world of fiction and movie making, one name sticks out - that of the Japanese animation team known as Studio Ghibli. This is the group responsible for more than just the Academy Award winning "My Neighbor Totoro" and their animation masterpiece, "Spirited Away".
That said, it's easy to find someone to say, "well there's no such thing as a good Studio Ghibli movie." In my mind, we're going to take a look at some of the great films in this group and see if there's a movie you could see in theaters that hasn't been written about yet.
"Miracle in the Cell No. 7" is probably one of the most compelling films I've ever seen. A young couple are in the hospital and it seems that something supernatural has happened to their cell phone. The girl takes it away and seems to remember the little boy she knew. How it all ties together I'll let you discover for yourself.
From the start, this story can be told with the help of some great storytellers. In fact, the director Tomoyuki Tanaka, himself a writer and a novelist, has written a number of novels that tell this story. You can easily get caught up with this thriller, as it's one of the better works he's done in years.
Director Hayao Miyazaki came up with a bit of the future of the story when he was asked to help bring this to life. As one of the biggest names in animation today, it was only fitting that he would be the one who took the wheel. A concept with his name on it probably speaks to the dream of what the story could have been.
One of the first questions I had was whether or not the special effects used in this film would be computer generated or live action. In addition to how it looks on screen, I really liked the animation that was involved in the editing process. It was also great to see a Japanese director trying to break into Hollywood, as he did here.
If you haven't seen "Cell No. 7" in theatres then this might be a good time to catch up. At first, it may seem like the usual genre movie that you might have seen, but it does its job quite well. You'll probably be cheering and laughing along when it comes to a close.
If you're looking for a unique movie to watch, then I recommend you give this movie a try. Maybe you'll even be on the edge of your seat watching it and you'll want to find the next one to watch.
