One of the most surprising and original proposals that we have been able to know in this Festival of Cannes 2017, has been the 3D animation film entitled Red Shoes and The 7 Dwarfs. It is a South Korean production developed by Locus Animation studios and in which a peculiar review of the Disney classic: Snow White and the 7 dwarfs are made.
The word shows an "uncomfortable truth" in the words of its director, Sung-ho Hong. The story, a twist of the classic story, revolves around the famous "seven dwarfs" ancient princes turned into small and horrifying creatures because of a curse and whose only way to break the spell is being kissed by the beautiful Snow White. The princes, horrified by their new appearance, will gradually realize the true sense of beauty.
Red Shoes And The 7 Dwarfs have passed through a lot, actually. The movie has been in production for more than a decade, suffered a marketing disaster and gets to cinemas much later than it should have, with a serious delay, but finally, here we are.
The movie hit the cinemas of Korea first the past July 25th, and we'll tell you how it went in case you want to watch it online. The animated movie had received terrible criticism for its promotion content that seemed to be not very appropriate for the whole family since back in 2017 the Cannes Festival burned it for being fat-shaming and showing a scene with dwarfs and an image of Snow White with not many clothes that leaves much to think about.
So, the trailer was deleted from YouTube after the scandal, and the creators had to offer a big apology, but they renewed their material, and now we're with a movie that wants to make us believe that there's more in this life than just what we can see with our eyes, there's more magic than we think.
So this is how the movie goes in case you want to know before watching online: We have a princess with a bit of an overweight problem in her hands, who, being as innocence as you'd think, tries to eat a cursed apple. However, the apple transforms itself into a pair of beautiful red-colored heels, and these heels transform anyone who wears them into what the standards would classify as the most beautiful girl. When Snow White wears them, she immediately loses a ton of weight, so she's chased out of the kingdom by the Witch Queen, and this is how our slim Snow White founds the house of 7 curious and not very tall men.
She doesn't say her real name or identity, but she calls herself Red Shoes, and just in the film of 1937, the dwarfs fall for the charms of the princess, however, these dwarfs are very different from those of the original Snow White. T
hey are a group of hunters that chase monsters, and now are cursed to look how they look currently, with green skin and short height, and here is precisely where the trick is; the kiss of a princess would return them to their attractive and human appearance, and they look desperately for this.
On the other hand, the now Red Shoes does not want to get back to her true, not so skinny genuine body. In the end, Red Shoes and The 7 Dwarfs, has the classic and known tropes such as the search for true love, and the intention of showing the audience how the beauty comes from within and not our outside look.
It is a shame then that in this tale, Snow White never really matures beyond her pretty face. We can even see that at the end, when Snow White “accepts” her true form and identity, the red shoes, which attach only to people who want their magical effects, show that Snow White almost always in reality wants to look skinnier.
And also in the movie she only reaches the point of satisfaction though the approval of men, which is exactly what the movie should go against. In the end, this is just the same or even a worse version of the original beloved tale, that promises a lot and could've given us what it offered, but still, it should rather have stayed hidden when the 2017 Cannes Festival told it to do so.
