Castle Freak is an oddball animated film that was one of the year's most talked about movies. An American family (bara Cramson, Jeffrey Combs) who has suffered trauma after a plane crash becomes possessed by a demon. The entire family has to deal with Castle's erratic behavior and learn how to cope with possession, and a whole new set of problems. It is directed by Tim Burton, who is famous for his movie franchise like Alice in Wonderland and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. However, this is not your typical Burton film and will be something completely different.
This isn't your typical scary or suspense horror movie. This is a truly entertaining and dark comedy. If you are looking for a good time with some laughs, this is the film for you. In case you don't know, it is a remake of the original Castle Freak from 1984. There have been many changes throughout the years, but the basic story remains the same. Hopefully this film has enough originality to stand on its own two feet instead of being a cheap rip-off.
So what makes Castle freak so much fun to watch? Well, besides the fact that it is funny and witty at the same time, I find that it is a great example of how a horror movie should be. For starters, it takes itself and its story seriously. From the beginning, you can tell that Castle Freak is truly an intelligent film and the atmosphere and characters are so real, there is even a little bit of reality to the whole thing.
The story line starts with a father and his son who are visiting a newly built amusement park called Castle Freak. They are in there for the afternoon, when a vicious predator suddenly appears out of the bushes and begins chasing them. The father and son are separated and when they come back, the mother begins screaming about the strange man in the bushes. The movie then cuts to a man in his 20's trying to figure out what is going on. He is told by his friend that he should go check out the castle, but before he can, there appears to be a massive explosion in the sky and another mysterious figure appears and starts chasing him as well. The man is taken to a mental institution for evaluation where he meets up with two other individuals who also need to go check out the castle.
Castle freak was written and directed by Greg Garcia and starred Michael Caine. This is my favorite horror movie remake of all time. There is just something about seeing the original version that gets re-watch worthy. The special effects were awesome, the special effects man were scary (especially when he is throwing objects at the kids), and the cast was very good (especially Michael Caine). I also liked how they added the voices of Tim Matheson and Wes Craven to the movie. This was just a solid horror movie remake with a great story and great special effects.
Castle freak is a brilliant re-telling of the story of H.P. Scream. While it may not be in the same league as the newer horror movies like Saw, I found this to be a very entertaining movie that didn't try too hard to be scary. It just had its own little twist on the original story and did a very good job at it.
