The Stand In is the debut movie from writer/producer Greg Garcia and starring Felipe Scullino. The movie chronicles the life of an aspiring actress looking to get noticed in Hollywood. The movie tells the story of a disenchanted stand-in comedy actor and his desperate plan to get into the business by selling a screenplay he wrote to a Hollywood producer. The Stand In is a very entertaining movie that highlights the absurd lengths some people will go to just to make a buck. I won't give the movie away, but it's filled with great one-liners and great acting.
Greg Garcia wrote and directed The Stand In as his debut project, and it was produced by Universal Pictures. The Stand In was released on June 3rd, 2020, just a few weeks before the release of the much talked about The Dark Knight Rises. This adaptation of the novels on which The Stand In is based was delayed somewhat, so that the director could prepare The Dark Knight. It was then released in the summer of 2020. Both The Stand In and The Dark Knight Rises earned a record amount of money at the box office, and with both films are going straight to DVD, the success of The Stand In is being sought after by directors and producers seeking to harness this success for future projects. There are already rumors that The Stand In could be making it's way into the upcoming Spider-Man and Wolverine 3 movies as a way to cash in on the success of their respective trailers and TV series.
A similar plot exists in the second Netflix film, Frida 2s, that is due out later this year. In this film, starring Meryl Streep, James Marsden, and Ed Harris, Frida stumbles upon a hidden museum that holds the original artifacts from her mother's homeland, Argentina. These artifacts include a sword, a dagger, and a bow and arrow. The museum itself is the brainchild of a wealthy family that wishes to place it in the worldarium but has been denied access due to a lack of funding.
One of the greatest pluses to The Stand In is the cast of characters. Playing a supporting role in the film were standout actors Michael Caine, Dan Aykroyd, Marilu Henner, John Bonham Carter, John Leguizamo, Emmannuel Chriqi, and Joanna Stayton. This ensemble cast is a who's who of Hollywood's best known faces, and they did a fantastic job of bringing the material to life. With great dialogue and direction, the streaming service went with the grain, and The Stand In was a true gem of a movie.
Another possibility for a follow-up to The Stand In is the release of a standalone stand and find movie. The standalone feature could easily be adapted into another action film, or television series, given the success of The Stand In. However, the time of a TV series such as this would likely be limited to a season, where as a movie could run for two whole years. A movie is also more portable and allows for more worldwide marketing. When you watch The Stand In, the language is dubbed over in English and subtitles are available for those who don't speak fluent English. As well, the streaming of the film would be available on several different languages.
If this movie makes it to DVD, I would be very excited. The Stand In was a sensational movie that showcase some of the finest acting talent from the era, and some beautiful visual design work. The Stand In was a vehicle that showcased a bit of everything. Now, that it's out on DVD, maybe someone will take a chance at producing a better version of The Stand In. If you've enjoyed The Stand In, you'll love the chance to see it in high definition.
