Escape The Undertaker is a dark comedy directed by Luc Jacquet and starring WWE wrestlers The New Day, Kofi Kingston and The Undertaker. The movie, which debuted on Netflix last Tuesday, is produced by Constantin Film Enterprises and distributed by Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment. In the movie, Kota, an escaped serial killer, stumbles into the professional wrestling world, where he feigns his own death and wrecks havoc before being apprehended.
Escape The Undertaker is a dark comedy that uses the theme of horror to create a thrilling plot. The movie is the latest in a long series of interactive video games that the WWE have produced in an attempt to break into the massively popular multiplayer online role-playing game market. The Undertaker, an ancient evil figure who tries to escape from the black and white world he inhabits, is thrown into a world where he must learn to survive amongst ordinary people. Along the way, he teams up with a number of characters, each with his own agenda, before ultimately escaping from the gruesome clutches of The Deadman. The story uses a variety of novel mediums to create its engaging characters, combining comedy with horror for an experience that anyone can enjoy.
One of the best parts of the movie is the interactive element that takes players deeper into the game's world than they've ever been before. For example, one sequence features WWE wrestlers The New Day, Kofi Kingston and Big E working out in a fitness gym, preparing for their big match at Elimination Chamber against The Undertaker and The Killer. Throughout the movie, we get to witness The Deadman performing his usual monotonous routine, while laying the groundwork for his big finish. As he does, a series of cut-scenes jump ahead in time to show us the moment when he injects The Deadman with a lethal needle, right into his heart. Viewers are then caught up in the moment as The Deadman prepares for the final confrontation, while Kofi and Kingston execute their plan to escape.
Although the majority of the movie centers on The Undertaker and Kofi, there are a few interludes where RVD, A-Train and Billy Gunn appear, all of which provide entertaining fodder for WWE fans. In addition, the movie provides WWE fans with a look into what it would be like to have a WWE live event. During one scene, Triple H tells his audience that he's giving them the opportunity to choose any wrestler they want to represent them in their upcoming main event, and then cuts a dramatic promo about how he has chosen Billy Gunn, Randy Orton, Triple H, Shawn Michaels and The New Day. While the crowd reacts with skepticism towards this seemingly unprecedented selection, The Miz arrives on the stage just in time to interfere in the match, interrupting Triple H and asking him if he can put him in a Triple H vs. Michaels match.
While The Miz and RVD seem to be the odd couple when it comes to WWE booking, the two actually have a long history dating back before The New Day came to prominence. The two have even feuded with each other for the chance to challenge The Undertaker at some point during his career, but they finally settled on a plan to conquer the Undertaker at SummerSlam 2021. This new angle is unique in the annals of professional wrestling history, where matches are often built around heel wrestlers versus big men. With the addition of Diesel, The Miz has become the most well known face of WWE, making him a household name well beyond his days as a wrestler.
Escape The Undertaker is not only a fun action movie, but also an entertaining educational film. A great example of this is the information given by WWE writer Eric Bischoff during a backstage interview with A-Train and Kofi. Bischoff provides background on how The Miz became a WWE superstar, why he changed his name to The Miz, how he became a WWE Hall of Famer, and how he continues to be such a huge presence in WWE today. He reveals how The Miz received his start, how he became so successful in WWE, and how he continues to connect with his peers and fans through WWE events and promotions. If you are a wrestling fan and have never seen Escape The Undertaker or another interactive movie about wrestling, this is a great place to start. While not exactly a horror film, this is a movie that will make wrestling fans very happy.
