Hitman's Wife is a series of action and comedy starring Nicholas Cage, Sal Mineo, Dabney Coleman, Evander Holyfield, and Carrie Fisher. Based on the novel called Hands of Love, this film follows the life of Christ Church. His wife has been strangled and murdered by her husband while he's away on a business trip. This prompts him to go onto an international arms dealer's meeting, but he is stopped and arrested by Mexican agent Jaimes Gooden. He then teams up with a gang called the Kings (formed from some of the same people from the first film) and travels across the country with them.
This film is directed by Mike de Leon, who previously worked with producer Harvey and Bob Weinstein on the animated series Dolphin Tale. The film has a great deal of potential and it's clear that the intention is to create a similar type of film to the successful Dolphin Tale. If so, why haven't they made a Hitman's Wife film? Well, for one thing, most people probably aren't familiar with the original plot, which centers on a plot involving a hit-and-run driver.
For another, they're just not very good at developing stories and characters. Plus, the entire idea of turning an interesting murder mystery into a film and making it entertaining may seem like a stretch, to say the least. It also would be kind of expensive considering all the other characters in the series. So is there a chance that Hitman's Wife could become a franchise?
Well, as you may have guessed, I don't think so. There are still a number of installments to the Hitman's Wife series, and all of them have the same basic concept. The film simply follows the main character, Christian Grey, as he solves various crimes and brings down the bad guys. They've managed to keep the core concept the same, but instead of making the entire film centered on that, they've focused it on the relationship between him and his wife.
What I find interesting, is that the entire film is about how he becomes a good guy. It's about how he decides to take a life and does so without killing anyone. He even saves the wronged husband from a bullet, but only because he wants to help him make up for his mistakes. These actions earn him the respect of his partner, girlfriend, and family, and soon he's considered a man with complete rights over his family. This makes the movie one of the most interesting to watch in a long time. Instead of the typical cop and crime story, we get a story that focuses more on how people decide to help one another and how their differences lead them together.
I hope that by reading this review, you can see some of the potential that the film has. If you haven't seen the movie, you're definitely missing out. The first few minutes are excellent, and the movie builds up quite nicely throughout the rest of the film. If you like movies where a bad guy gets what's coming to him, than this movie is for you. And if you like movies where the good guy does something good, then this is the one for you.
